message from the president

Dear Members and Friends:

They say, a little magic goes a long way.

In a few weeks we’ll come together in Houston to experience the Magic of Flight at the 33rd Annual Airport Business Diversity Conference at the Marriott Marquis on June 16-20, 2017.  I’m so excited for what we have in store:

  • Airport Director's 20/30 Vision Forum where you will hear about the future of airports and the aviation industry from the Airport Directors who lead some of our nation’s key airports.
  • A Hidden Figures Jazz Brunch paying tribute to AMAC Founders and trailblazers from the award winning film Hidden Figures.
  • Bill Walker Memorial Golf Tournament is a fun, yet competitive environment that benefits the AMAC Foundation’s Scholarship program.  This Tournament honors one of AMAC’s own tireless servants, Bill Walker.
  • Airport Concession Joint Venture Question and Answer session where senior executives from the FAA will hear first-hand from you regarding barriers you have encountered with respect to joint ventures and offer clearly defined solution sets.
  • An open and direct dialogue in developing a flight plan for success in identifying, training, and promoting more minority airport leaders and senior managers.

The list goes on and on - Keynote Speakers, educational workshops led by industry leaders,  Celebrating Women in Aviation Breakfast and one of my personal favorites - the Business Matchmaking Session.  The event is not to be missed - a perfect blend of professional networking, educational sessions that will provide you with actionable steps to take your business to the next level, and social events that provide a relaxed environment to connect and create powerful relationships with decision makers and peers.

The weekend will provide endless opportunities, can’t wait to see you there!

AMAC Board Member Roger SpearmanAMAC’s Roger Spearman Encourages Entrepreneurs
to Sharpen Business Tools for Success

AMAC board member Roger Spearman, President and owner of St. Louis, MO–based A-1 Private Investigations and Security LLC (, tells a story that defines his personal philosophy and illuminates his extraordinary business success.

“Two loggers in Alaska were in a contest to cut down the most trees,” Spearman begins.  “One was enormous with huge muscles; the other was fit, but moderately sized.  By lunchtime the big man had stacks of logs and the other fella was far behind.  Some in the crowd lost interest in what appeared to be an uneven contest and left at lunch to explore the woods.

“Toward the end of the day,” he continues, “that group returned and, to their surprise, the smaller man had won the competition!  What happened during lunch to change the tide? They asked the big man, who told them that he had ‘enjoyed a hearty meal and returned refreshed.’  But, when they asked the winner what he had done at lunch, the winner replied: ‘I sharpened my axe.’

“That story resonated with me.  All my life I’ve kept my tools sharpened,” says Spearman with a smile. “And I encourage everyone to do the same.”

During 30 years – from 1973-2003 -- as an officer with the University City, MO, Police Department, Spearman rose from a patrolman to a sergeant to a detective and to a lieutenant.  Along the way he attended the FBI National Academy – an honor offered to less than 1 percent of police officers; he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice from Tarkio College; received a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Lindenwood University; and trained in business management at Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, on a scholarship sponsored by Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

“I like the pursuit of knowledge,” he says.  “I like to know what I don’t know and everything I need to know.”

In his last three years before retirement from the police department, Spearman had registered his business and moonlighted as a security officer, sometimes getting less than 4 hours of sleep.  This second career as a business owner turned into a full time pursuit in 2003.   In addition to security services, his company offers a wide range of civil and criminal investigative services.  “I learned early not to put all my eggs in one basket,” he says.

As his business began expanding, Spearman once again sharpened his tools.  He needed certain licenses to operate in each state where he wanted to open an office, and each license required a test.  “The tests are hard,” he notes with a wry grimace, “Most companies hire someone in the state with a ready license. But, I wanted to have complete control, so I took all the tests!”

Spearman ultimately took and passed more 20 tests for states including Missouri, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Michigan, District of Columbia, Tennessee and Texas.  Today, his company employs more than 100 professionals working for corporate and government clients.

In 2008, when his company began working for St. Louis Lambert International Airport, membership in AMAC was an excellent fit.  For Spearman, however, membership soon led to leadership.  He is currently Midwest Regional Director.

“AMAC is an amazing organization,” he says.  “I haven’t met a selfish person since I joined.  My membership provides both support for my business goals and the opportunity to contribute time and energy to a worthy mission – an excellent balance.”

Private planes may not be taxed under Trump’s plan to update U.S. airs

President Donald Trump’s top economic adviser said Tuesday that the administration’s proposal to modernize U.S. air traffic control “probably” would not include a tax on general aviation or business aircraft.

“We’re probably not even going to tax general aviation,” Gary Cohn, director of the National Economic Council, told a group of corporate executives at the White House. “There’s enough money in the aviation tax rate now.”

That could help sell the Trump proposal to opponents, including general aviation manufacturers and lawmakers from rural states.

Major airlines have been pushing to transfer control of the country’s airspace from the Federal Aviation Administration to a private, nonprofit board governed by the airlines.
