AMAC Scholar Stephen Haim Thrives in Airport Industry Career

Stephen HaimEight years ago AMAC Scholar Stephen Haim received a scholarship from the AMAC Foundation. That financial support, along with grants from other sources, has led Haim to a life he loves and a high-powered position in the aviation industry.

As a child growing up in San Francisco near the Van Nuys airport, Haim’s mother and older brother used to sit on their lawn and watch the air shows during the summer months. Back in those days, he could stroll through the airport at will and enjoy the ambiance of passenger movement and the roar of big engines. “I loved it. It was something that I knew I wanted to be a part of.”

At age 18, he wasn’t sure how to get into the aviation field, and wasn’t able to focus on the junior college courses that were recommended for him. To keep a hand in the airport industry, he worked part-time in baggage handling for Continental Airlines and also for a small aviation training school, where he handled maintenance, fueling and flight schedules.

reaganairport_airtrafficcontrol_080212gettyCongress prepping short-term FAA bill

The Hill

House and Senate committee leaders are preparing a short-term reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration that is expected to include a handful of permanent policy provisions related to drones and aviation security.

The 18-month patch will not contain a controversial proposal to separate the nation’s air traffic control from the FAA, which stalled a long-term House version of the bill and ultimately forced committee leaders to go down the path of another short-term extension.
