Dear AMAC Members and Friends:
Just in time for the rush of holiday travelers, AMAC member Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) has opened a $125 million Concourse D/E Connector.
This major airport construction project will improve customer service for BWI Airport travelers, providing additional international airline capacity and new passenger services, including a new security checkpoint to serve domestic and international passengers. The connector will also add new food and retail concessions, a children’s play area and an outdoor patio space with airfield views.
I attended the opening celebration not only to applaud the timely completion, but to congratulate Airport Manager Ricky Smith on helping to exceed the DBE participation goal of 22 percent for construction of the multi-million dollar project.
Ricky inherited a robust DBE program with a long history of success when he took the position of BWI Airport Manager in June of 2015. He recently told DBE Magazine that his involvement in this project has been “to make sure that our office of minority business development has the capacity and the resources to make sure DBE businesses are getting access to the opportunities they were promised and that they are able to perform in a way that is favorable to the project.”
It is clear that Ricky has achieved his goals for involvement and AMAC is proud of the success of our member airport.
President-Elect Trump Taps Former Labor Secretary to Head US DOT
Secretary-Designate Elaine Chao Will Execute Trump Infrastructure Plan
President-elect Donald Trump has picked Elaine Chao, former U.S. Labor Secretary and wife to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), to lead the government’s transportation policy and his plans to rebuild infrastructure in a program reportedly valued at as much as $1 trillion. Trump's transition team said, “Secretary Chao's extensive record of strong leadership and her expertise are invaluable assets in our mission to rebuild our infrastructure in a fiscally responsible manner.”
Chao served as Secretary of Labor under George W. Bush from 2001-2009, the only cabinet level official who served the entirety of both terms of the administration. Chao was the first woman of Asian descent to be appointed to a cabinet position when she was tapped to be Labor secretary in 2001. Chao’s experience in the transportation sector was established when she held the office of Deputy Secretary of Transportation from 1989-1991. She would also serve as Chair of the Federal Maritime Commission and Deputy Maritime Administrator.
Before her time as Secretary of Labor, Chao served as the director of United Way. She was also the director of the Peace Corps, where she established the first Peace Corps programs in the Baltic nations and the former Soviet Union. Before her government service, Chao was an international banker for Citicorp, as well as a distinguished fellow at the Heritage Institute and the Hudson Institute.
She currently resides as a member on the Board of Directors of many companies/organizations, such as Wells Fargo, Newscorp, Vulcan Materials, Ingersoll-Rand PLC, Crowley Petroleum Services, and Protective Life Insurance Company. In the past, Chao was also involved with Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Clorox Company, and Northwest Airlines.
Secretary-Designate Chao is a known commodity within DOT and throughout Washington. Reaction from the transportation stakeholder community regarding the selection has been overall positive and Chao’s nomination is expected to receive Senate confirmation early in 2017. Secretary-designate Chao is on record in support of small and medium sized businesses and AMAC looks forward to engaging with her on DBE matters of importance pre and post-confirmation.

And firms with fewer than 100 employees accounted for 46% of average employment growth. That’s why the President has made small business growth one on his highest priorities, i.e., putting in place policies that encourage a climate of growth, innovation and entrepreneurship. He also supports policies that would expand access to quality, affordable health care for small businesses, such as Association Health Plans. These plans allow small and medium sized employers to band together, pool their risk, and purchase health insurance for their employees at more affordable rates.”

After praising the efforts and contributions of small businesses to the economy, Chao stated that she was “mindful” of the fact that, “sometimes the government does things that are well-intentioned but put an enormous burden on your businesses”. She continued by saying, “That’s why we are increasing our emphasis at the Department of Labor on compliance assistance. We want to get helpful information out to you to make it easier for you to comply with these regulations. We want to make sure the Department of Labor staff is there to help you, not just to fine and punish you, should you make an inadvertent mistake.”

Faith and Commitment at the Root of Business Owner’s Success
As small child, Antwanye Ford, President and CEO of Enlightened Inc., an information technology (IT) and management consulting firm, was fascinated by how things work. “I remember particular interest in a tape recorder,” he recalls with a smile. “I took it apart to examine and then tried – unsuccessfully -- to put it back together.” His father, he says, “was not happy.”
But that boundless curiosity has led him to mega-success in the IT field with a company that today employs more than 200. Enlightened, Inc. specializes in cyber security, systems integration services, and management consulting. The company serves federal, state, and local clients as well as transportation organizations across the country.
“I always knew I was going to be an entrepreneur,” Ford says. At George Washington University he met his current business partner, Andre Rogers, and they shared enthusiasm for eventually starting an enterprise in the field of technology. Ford earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Information Systems and a Master’s degree in Information Systems with honors.
After college, Ford put aside his plans to go into business for himself and focused on gaining significant IT and marketing experience in corporate America. For 20 years, he worked for MCI and INTELSAT in positions of increasing responsibility, but his lifelong dream of entrepreneurship never died.
Enlightened was ultimately founded in 1999, the company name and philosophy rooted in Ford’s strong Christian faith. “I knew that I wanted to build something, to create technology that people would find useful,” Ford says. “I wanted to provide services that people need.”
Over the years, Enlightened and its founder have been honored with a multitude of awards and accolades for dedication, hard work, and innovative solutions. In 2005, Ford was selected by the editorial board of Inside the Minds™ as an author for the book, CEO Best Practices: Skills, Values & Strategies for Successful CEOs. The work features top CEO’s representing the nation's leading companies. Ford contributed a chapter to the book entitled, "The Spiritual Side of Leadership".
Ford’s faith has led him to an active role in community service and a commitment to supporting and mentoring other businesses owners. he served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the DC Chamber of Commerce in 2013 and is currently an active Board Member. He also currently serves as the Chair of the Board for On-Ramps to Careers, as well as a member of the Board of Directors for the U.S. Black Chamber of Commerce.
His commitment to small business advocacy led him to AMAC. “This is an organization that helps small businesses achieve growth and -- most important to me -- build relationships with others in the airport industry,” he says. “I felt I could both bring value and gain value from membership.”
Additionally, he notes, “I’ve known Krystal Brumfield (President and CEO of AMAC) for many years. She is a great visionary and leader, committed to service and outreach. There is significant synergy with my personal community service and business goals.”

Broward County DBE “Meet and Greet” Event Held Today
The Broward County Office of Economic and Small Business Development (OESBD) invites interested DBE certified firms to attend a DBE Meet & Greet today for the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) Terminal 4 Apron Expansion - Lift Station.

TPFLHV is seeking DBE firms to subcontract portions of the project specific to the lift station installation, as part of the Terminal 4 Apron Expansion at FLL. Federal Reserve Board Holds Industry Day Event for Small Businesses
